24.August bis 03.September, 2006

24. August bis 3. September 2006

From „Vis“ we sail to „Veli Luka“ which is north of Korcula. The bay is lovely for swimming but there is no restaurant in the vicinity, so in the evening we return to Veli Luka for dinner and then return to the bay to spend a peaceful night. Thanks to radar and echo sounders this is possible. Next day we enjoy yet another lazy morning swimming etc. and then we leave for a bay to the south of Korcula where it is only 10 minutes walk to the town. Korcula is a beautiful, romantic old town with big stone walls, narrow little streets with big shiny cobbled stones. We feel set back in time, but the modern world quickly catches up with us as we visit an internet café to check our bank accounts and look into our emails etc.

Our next destination is “Mjlet”. The bay we anchor at is called “Polace”. Weather doesn’t look to good and it starts to rain. The anchor slips, but after a position change and a new try it holds firmly although the wind is fairly strong. The weather stays bad, but we have to sail on to Dubrovnik as Michelle and Gogo fly home from there. Wind gusts over 40 KN. . Thankfully, we arrive in the Yacht club in Cruz after a rough sail. Early Sunday morning we take Michelle and Gogo to the airport to wave them off. Obviously “Mum” sheds a few tears.
After their departure we take a bus into the old town of Dubrovnik, also a beautiful, romantic town very special to see. We took lots of photo. In the evening we move to a pretty bay called Zaton, north of Dubrovnik.

On 28th August our permit expires for Croatia, so we set sail to cross the Adriatic to Italy, Otranto. The first part of the sail, the wind is from the beam, and we make good speed of 6-7 knots. But as the Adriatic winds are not constant the wind changes in strength and direction permanently. We then had the wind directly on the nose, so we changed plans and sailed to San Foca about 10 SM north of Ortanto. A new weather front is brewing and the wind turns from SW to N and blows 40Kn. This stays with us for the next three days. The water sprays over the 4 meter high wall in front of us. On the 4th day the wind weakens a little, 5-6 Bft. So we decide to set sail again with destination San Maria di Leuca. Once in the Marina we go for a nice evening meal. Next day we anchor, as the Marina charges are fairly high – a good hotel is the same price!!
6a.m .in the morning we leave to cross the Gulf of Taranto with destination Crotone. After 14hrs of calm sailing we arrive at 8.00 p.m. Set anchor and go for pasta.
