We are still anchored behind the island Banedup. In the afternoon we go snorkeling and aswell as lots of different fish, we see a big Sting Ray ray and an Eagle Ray. We follow the Eagle Ray for a while and it gives the impression as if he can fly under water.

28.2.2008

Claudio came and gave us some fish he had caught. He also invited us to a "sing song" evening together with more sailing friends on their boat. Marlise is a great guitar player. I baked a cake to take with us to the "sing song" and as always we had a great time.

29.2.2008

The weather isn`t so good today. We do a bit of snorkeling and then Heinz started to print out a "sailors recipe book" of which he photographed each page.

1.3.2008

Marlise and Claudio came for breakfast today, and also to say Goodbye. They are leaving for Rio Diabolo (appr. 15sm) to do some shopping and we will be gone when they come back. Just as they are leaving, Wolfgang and Uli from S/Y Golden Tiller (friends from Austria) are sailing in. We didn`t expect them till tomorrow, but they have sailed faster than anticipated from Curasao. We have lots to talk about.

2.3.2008

In the afternoon we are invited over to Golden Tiller for a drink and in the evening to eat a traditional Austrian dish "Krautfleckerl". We have a lovely time together, swapping lots of experiences, especially as we have both built the same type of boat.

3.3.2008

Uli and Wolfgang came "Frühschoppen" which means a drink before dinner. In the afternoon we enjoyed snorkeling again and in the evening we went to the "Monday get together" on BBQ island. Everyone brings "finger food" to share and their own drinks and also books to swop. A lot of "sailor" talk, where we hear that Bahia in Ecuador is very nice and interesting - that is where we also want to go.

4.3.2008

Today we sail back to the Eastern Lemmon Cays. Also the long awaited Canoe with fruit and vegetables came and we bought lots of stuff. Luckily they didn`t just have vitamins but also beer. We then took the Dinghy to Banedup to buy bread. I couldn`t resist buying a beautiful Mola. (special embroidery technic of the Kuna Ladies), In the evening we visit Uli and Wolfang to say "Goodbye". They have a time limit for their travels so they have to carry on.

5.3.2008

Lisa (who is known for making beautiful Molas) came in her canoe and I bought two, to have a top sewn with them. Otherwise we enjoyed a lazy day. I swam over to the island and had a walk to get some exercise.

6.3.2008

In the morning Heinz cleaned some of the underwater hull whilst I had another swim to the island and a walk, before setting sails for Chichime - approx. 6 sm. In the evening we cook and enjoy the Tuna we bought from the Kuna Indios.

7.3.2008

At 6:45 we set sail with destination "Panamarina". At first we can sail 5 knots but the wind dies and we have to use the engine. At 16:00h we tie up to a mooring at the marina. After an hours rest we take the dinghy and go across. We can get rid of our trash, do the washing and retrieve our boat key which Heinz forgot last time here. Also we enjoy a nice meal in their little French restaurant.

8.3.2008

After taking lunch in the restaurant we say our Goodbye`s and carry on to Portobelo. We enjoy lying in the hammock while Galathe sails 5-6 knots in calm waters. In the evening we go for dinner and only pay an unbelievable $4,70 for both meals including drinks. Afterwards we decided to watch a DVD on board.

9.3.2008

We leave Portobello at 9:15 and at 14:00 drop anchor at the Flats in Colon. On arrival, friends we have met before immediately come to say "Hello".

10.3.2008

Busy day! After breakfast we go to the Yacht Club where Heinz meets our agent to do all the paper work for the passage. This means going to the port captain, to emigration and to the canal authorities.
After all has been seen to we both take the taxi to the nearby shopping centre "Quatro Altro" to stock up on food and drinks.

11.3.2008

At 10:00 the pilot comes along side to drop off the "measurer". He measures very carefully and has lots of forms to fill in. After this is done we have to go per taxi to the bank and pay the canal fee - over 600 USD plus the puffer fee which is 900 USD.
Originally they said after the payment we would get the date of passage, but unluckily in our case they couldn`t find our papers and we were told to wait a day :-(.

12.3.2008

Early morning the pilot boat arrived, and the measurer came again apologizing that he had forgotten to fill one form out and that is the reason of the delay. When we phoned in at noon we were told that our date of passage is the 4th April. Three weeks waiting time and we had anticipated waiting one week :-(.
In the evening we pack up to leave the boat for a day to help Frank as line hands on his passage through the canal. We passed the first three locks where we were elevated 9 meters per lock making 27 meters in all till we entered the "Gatun Lake", where we stayed the night.

13.3.2008

Early start at 6:00 a.m. to reach the last three locks at noon. Here we are lowered to the same level as the Pacific. Again approx. 9 meters per lock. At 3:p.m. we enter the Pacific! Here we met our friends Coby and Arnold who are waiting for us till we can come through. They also said they would come with the bus to Colon and help us out as line hands. We enjoy our short reunion by taking a drink at the Balboa Yacht Club. Then we have to travel with the bus back to Colon approx 3hrs journey.

14.3.2008

We do some more food shopping. The "scheduler" said to phone in every three days and see if our passage can be put forward. We decide to do that, but if after the first time phoning nothing has changed then we will tell them to keep that date and we shall sail to Bocas del Toro to visit our friends Maria and Josef Wettstein who also come from the same village where we live in Austria - Henndorf.

15.3.2008

The scheduler told us on the phone that we still have the same date. We go to the Yacht Club to do our washing, some last minute shopping and at 17:30 we set sail for Bocas. Our first stop is Islas Escudo, 105 sm. We have good winds and can sail at 6-7 knots. In the night it calms and towards the morning we have to use the engine.

16.3.2008

We arrive at Islas Escudos at 16:30 and after a nice meal on board we look forward to a peaceful night.

17.3.2008

In the night the wind changed and blows towards the land which created a lot of swell. We had wanted to stay a day but decided to leave for Bluefield Lagoon. After sailing 27 sm we drop anchor at 17:00. Here there is a little village with a small shop for basics. The people are very friendly and luckily one lady even speaks a little English.

18.3.2008

After breakfast we go for a walk and enjoy talking to the friendly people. We then set sail for Palos where Maria and Josef have bought land. Navigation is quite difficult as we have to work our way through many lagoons and reefs. Early afternoon we arrive there. The "wiedersehen" with Maria and Josef is special - living so close together in Henndorf and now meeting again here in Panama. They have bought 15 acres land and are now working hard to cultivate the land and build a house up on a hill overlooking the bay.

19.3.2008

At 8:00 we join Maria and Josef on their trip to Bocas in their big canoe with heavy out boarder. They really look after the Indio families who work for them. That is why they are taking two Indio ladies and their children to the hospital as it seems they have "Leishmanose" which is caused by sand fly bites. This leads to open wounds and if it is ignored can cause bad damage to the inside organs. Luckily Maria used to be a nurse, so she has been dressing the wounds to avoid bad inflammations.
The hospital diagnose "Leishmanose" and they have to become daily injections 10 cm2 - heavy medication, which luckily Maria is allowed to give them.
Bocas is a nice town and we do some shopping and have lunch together.
In the evening we travel back 15 sm with Josef`s boat. It is very fast as it substitutes a car. They have no road that leads to the land they have bought.
In the evening we go swimming in the bay, but not for long as I made acquaintance with a jelly fish. :-).

20.3.2008

The heavens have opened and it is raining "cats and dogs"! We use the time to clean and tidy the boat etc. In the afternoon Maria pays us a visit and brings us a branch of bananas freshly cut from their "garden". Taste delicious ripened on the tree.

21.3.2008

It is still raining, we are beginning to realize why it is called "rain forest"! The jungle is still inhabited with slots, monkeys, wild cats, snakes and lots of different birds such as parrots, toucans and colibries but alas also with lots of annoying insects such as chitras and mosquitos etc. etc. Also the flora is breathtaking with 40 meter high trees with a diameter of 3-6 meters. Lots of different plants with big thorns, poisonous leaves and also a big selection of frogs. A permanent concert of animal noises. We are awed. If it wasn`t for the biting and stinging insects, we couldn`t imagine a place nicer to live.

22.3.2008

Josef gave us a hard disc to copy with approx. 100 German films on it. So now we are looking forward to having our private little cinema now and then. In the afternoon Josef and Maria take us to a little Indio restaurant very near. It is not difficult to choose what you want as there is only one dish served. Chicken legs with platanos (vegetable bananas). It tastes delicious and only cost 3 USD for 3 people.

23.3.2008

This morning we are all invited to breakfast at Marilyn and Tony`s. An English couple who have 150 acres of land with their own little private dock. The path up to the beautiful house they have built up on a hill, leads through the mangroves. In 3 1/2 years, with the help of Indio workers, they have built up their own little paradise. We sit out on the balcony and can look down onto the jungle where we can watch parrots and colibries and also have a beautiful view of the bay. Marilyn took us for a tour round the rain forest surrounding the house. She often takes this walk and knows the names of the plants and fruits etc. and warns us which we may touch and which not. After a 1 ½ tour we arrive back to the house and enjoy interesting conversation with all. Johanna and Wayne another couple who have bought land nearby invite us all to a BBQ. Wayne took over the grill and Johanna (an Austrian lady)made salads and sauces.

24.3.2008

At 7:00 a.m. we join Maria and Josef on their journey to Almirante in their boat, and then to Chanquinola (10km from the Costa Rican boarder) with the bus. They both have to go to emigration and to the bank. We gladly join them to experience and see what we can of the land and the people. We also buy a hammock to have in reserve for the boat. Back in Almirante Josef bought timber for his building project. Once again we have enjoyed an interesting day.

25.3.2008

Another rainy day. We are invited for lunch and Maria spoils us with "pepper steak". Afterwards we walk to the Indios and give them reading glasses we have brought especially to give away. They are really thrilled. We asked if they have something to read to try the glasses out, and they brought the bible written in their Indio language. We tried to read it and all had a big laugh. While we were there, Maria gave her "patients" the injections they have had subscribed against the "Leishmenose".

26.3.2008

It is time to sail back to Colon. At 11:00 a.m. we say our "Goodbye`s" with all our best wishes for their building project in the jungle of Panama.

27.3.2008

Again we anchor at the Bluefield Lagoon on our way back. An American Yacht is also anchored there and we go to say "Hallo" and enjoy a drink together.
