Wir feiern meinen Geburtstag und gehen dazu mit Arnold und Coby in ein gutes Restaurant in Cartagena essen. Die letzten Tage in Cartagena sind durch die Vorbereitungen für die Weiterfahrt geprägt. Wir holen die neuen Brillen ab, müssen noch ausklarieren und bekommen im letzten Moment unsere neuen Cockpit Polster. Am 10. ist eine große Parade am Wasser und wir machen einen Großeinkauf, da wir auf den San Blas nur beschränkte Einkaufsmöglichkeiten haben.

Sylvia and I celebrate my birthday, by inviting Coby and Arnold out to a nice meal in the old town of Cartagena. The last few days in Cartagena are taken up with the preparations for the continuation of our cruise. We have to collect our new glasses, check out and at the last minute our new cushions for the cockpit are ready and also have to be collected. In addition we have to do lots of food shopping to store up and manage to be back in time to watch the big "Water Parade" with lots of boats parading up and down with many people singing and dancing on their decks.

Nach dem wir die letzten Pesos verbraucht haben lichten wir um 10:00 den Anker und es geht ca. 20 SM Richtung Islas Rosarios. Es ist wenig Wind und der genau von vorne. Also Motoren. Allerdings ist das auch nicht so einfach, da wir ziemlichen Bewuchs haben dürften. Das Wasser in Cartagena war nicht sehr sauber. Am Abend kommen wir in einer herrlichen Bucht in Rosario an. Die Einfahrt ist zwischen vielen Riffen und es ist schon spät, so dass sie nicht mehr gut zu sehen sind. Aber wir schaffen es, da wir in Cartagena gute Karten von den Roasarios bekommen haben. Hier liegen wir sehr geschützt und ruhig.

At 10:00a.m. we set sail for Islas Rosarios - 20 SM. We have little wind, and that on the nose so we have to use the engine. That is also not really easy as we seem to have a lot of fowling from the dirty water in Cartagena harbour. We arrive in the evening at a beautiful bay in Rosario. The entrance is surrounded by lots of riffs and due to it being late, it is very difficult to see them. We manage it, owing to the fact that we bought excellent see maps in Cartagena.

Unterwasser putzen ist angesagt. Die Schraube ist auf beiden Seiten je ca. 2 cm mit Seepocken bewachsen und es wundert uns nicht, dass wir keinen guten Speed hatten. Auch sonst sieht das Unterwasser katastrophal aus. Auch am nächsten Tag ist noch Putzen angesagt. Ich mache das Unterwasser und Sylvia die Wasserlinie und das Cockpit. Sonst genießen wir das saubere Wasser und die Ruhe dieser schönen Insel.

Now we have to clean the underwater. The propellor is covered with 2cm`s of barnicals on both sides. We are not surprised that we couldn`t make good speed. Also the unterwater looks a big mess. So the next day is also taken up with cleaning. I do the underwater and Sylvia cleans the water line and the cockpit. Otherwise we enjoy swimming in nice clean waters and the peace of this beautiful island.

Um 8:00 geht der Anker hoch und wir segeln Richtung San Blas ca. 150 SM. Wir haben beschlossen die San Blas von der kolumbianischen Küste her zu erkunden und unser Ziel ist Puerto Escoses. Eine sehr tiefe geschützte große Bucht. Leider ist der Wind und die Strömung gegen uns. . Um 2:00 Uhr früh macht dann der Motor eigenartige Geräusche, der Grund ist ein dickes Bündel Seegras, das sich um die Schraube gewickelt hat. Also muss ich ins Wasser. Mit Taucherlampe und Tauchermesser ist es aber bald geschafft und die Schraube ist frei und das Geräusch weg. Am Morgen springt der Watermaker nicht mehr an. Also erwartet mich Arbeit am Ankerplatz. "Drifter" mit der wir gemeinsam segeln, ist etwas schneller als wir und erreicht gegen 15:00 den Ankerplatz. Da er wie alles hier mit Riffen umgeben ist haben wir Bedenken im Dunkeln einzulaufen. Aber wir schaffen es gerade noch in der Dämmerung. Außerdem hat mir Arnold die Einfahrt über Funk beschrieben und ich habe einen sehr guten Panama Führer (Bauhaus). Wir sehen Lichter am Ufer und vermuten Kunas dort.

At 8:00 a.m. we lift the anchor and sail towards the San Blas Islands, approx. 150 SM. We decided to explore the San Blas from the Columbian side and therefore our first stop is Puerto Escoses. It is a big deep, sheltered bay. Unfortunately the wind and current are against us so that we are very slow - which we don`t like :-). At 2:00 a.m. the engine suddenly makes a strange noice and after having to go into the water armed with a diving lamp and a knife, Heinz finds that there is a bundle of sea weed around the propellor. In the morning the water maker also decides to make problems and refuses to start, which means more work for Heinz waiting at the next anchorage. Our friends on the S/Y Drifter are faster and arrive at the anchorage at 3:00 p.m. Owing to the fact that there are also a lot of riffs we are worried about arriving in the dark. Luckily we make it just before sunset. Also Arnold describes the entrance to us on the VHF and we have a excellent Panama guide. We can just about make out lights on the shore and summize that there may be a "Kuna Indio" village.

Am Morgen bietet sich uns eine tolle Überraschung. Wir liegen ganz in der Nähe einer Kuna Siedlung. Ein Teil ist auf einer kleinen Insel im Wasser und der andere Teil an Land. Alles Stroh Hütten. Später, nachdem der Watermaker repariert ist und wieder arbeitet, machen wir dann einen Ausflug ins Dorf. Es ist eine andere Welt. Einbäume sind das einzige Verkehrsmittel und es gibt keinen Strom, kein Telefon, fast nichts was nicht hier wächst. Jedes Dorf hat einen "Chief" und der hat 2 Assistenten. Die kommen auch dann per Kanu zum Schiff, stellen sich vor und kassieren die Ankergebühr. 10 USD, dafür erhalten wir die Erlaubnis an Land gehen zu dürfen und können bleiben so lange wir wollen. Der Besuch im Dorf ist ein Höhepunkt. Alle begleiten uns und zeigen uns die verschiedenen Pflanzen, wie sie Ihre Häuser bauen, die Kanus, ihre Segel usw. Alle was sie dafür benötigen sind Materialien aus dem Urwald.

In the morning we find that we are anchored near to a Kuna settlement. Part of it lies on a small island and the other part on land. There are many small huts. The huts are made from renewable fast growing materials. The floor is slightly elevated with compacted sand, while the walls are made of cane. Every village has a chief with two assistants. They come with their canoe to the boat, ask for 10.00 USD anchorage fee and we get the allowance to come over and visit. So after the watermaker has been rapaired we go to the village. It is a different world. Dug out canoes are the only transport they have. There is no electricity, telephone and everything is made from materials in the nearby jungle. The visit in the village is very special, the people escort us and show us their huts, explain how they are built, show us their boats plus sails and also describe the fauna.

Wir segeln weiter nach Islas Pinos. Hier liegen wir im Kanal zwischen der Insel und dem Festland hinter einem Riff, an dem sich dauernd die Wellen brechen. Im Dorf müssen wir zuerst zu "Chief" um die Erlaubnis zu bekommen hier zu ankern. Der Besuch im Dorf ist wieder ein Eintauchen in eine völlig andere Welt. Wir nehmen uns einen Führer und wandern durch den Dschungel auf dem Gipfel der Insel. Es regnet nicht aber wir sind genau so nass als ob wir in einen Schauer gekommen währen. Wir sehen Affen,Vögel und Frösche und machen Bekanntschaft mit Moskitos und Ameisen die uns sofort beißen. An einen kleinen Bach legen wir eine Rast ein und trinken das Wasser, das uns nach der Anstrengung besonders gut schmeckt. Zurück im Dorf kauft Sylvia eine Mola, eine indianische Stickerei, die die Indio Frauen hier anfertigen und die ein Teil ihrer Kleidung ist.
Die Regeln der Kunas sind sehr streng und sie haben damit bis heute ihre Eigenständigkeit und Originalität bewahrt. Jedes Dorf hat ein Congresso. Das ist die größte Hütte im Dorf.
In der Mitte sind 3 Hängematten für die 3 Chief`s des Dorfes. Darum herum sitzen in einem inneren Kreis die Frauen und Kinder und in einem äußeren Kreis die Männer. Jeden Tag um 14:00 trifft sich das ganze Dorf im Congresso um alles was anfällt zu besprechen. Da dies mit unter langwierig und einschläfernd sein kann hat man drei Leute damit beauftragt in unregelmäßigen Abständen ohrenbetäubende Schreie aus zustoßen. Wenn ein junger Mann dabei erwischt wird, dass er ein Mädchen küsst, wird das im Congresso behandelt und er muss entweder 60 USD zahlen oder heiraten. Wird er nochmals erwischt muss er - wenn er das Mädchen nicht heiratet - schon 120 USD zahlen usw. Unser Führer konnte beim dritten mal erwischt werden nicht mehr zahlen und so musste er heiraten.

We continue to sail to Islas Pino. Hier we are anchored in a chanell between the island and riffs over which the waves break. Then we have to go to the Village to ask the Chief if we are allowed to stay. Again the visit to the village is like being in another world. A guide escorts us through the jungle to the highest point of the island. It isn`t raining, but we are just as wet as if we had been caught in a heavy shower. We see monkeys, birds, frogs and also mosquitos and ants that bite us immediately. We rest at the side of a small stream and also drink the water which is refreshing after the fatigue of the walk. Back in the village, Sylvia buys a "Mola". The handicraft of the Indio women, which consists of materials laid on top of one another, cut out to patterns and sewn down in very, very tiny stiches. Lots of work and very beautiful. They also use these beautiful hand made "molas" as part of their dress.
The "Kuna" laws are very strict and therefore they have achieved to keep their culture and independence up till this day. Each village has a congress hall "congresso", which is the largest hut. In the middle of the "congresso" are three hammocks for the chiefs and in the first inner circle of benches the women and children are seated and in the second row, the men. They have a daily meeting there where they can ask questions, express complaints or ideas. Discussions can become very long and boring. As a consequence certain people are given the task of letting out "ear pearcing" shrieks at irregular intervals to keep everyone awake.
Further if a young man gets caught kissing his girlfriend he either has to marry her or pay USD 60.- The second time he gets caught the penalty is doubled and so forth! So in the consequence the people marry very young!!!

Wir bleiben einen Tag in Capo de Vela. Der Wind ist umlaufend und wir liegen gut und sicher vor einigen Hütten vor Anker. Hin und wieder können wir den Fischern zusehen, wie sie in der Bucht Ihre Netze von kleinen offenen Booten aus ausbringen oder einholen.

We stayed for just one day in Capo de Vela. The wind is variable but we are anchored safely with view to a few cute little huts. Now and then we see a few, small, open, fishing boats and watch as the men throw their nets.

Wir segeln nach Five Bays. 120 SM liegen vor uns, das Wetter ist nicht sehr schön immer wieder Regen und heftige Gewitter mit starken Böen. Aber am nächsten Morgen sehen wir in der Ferne Schnee am Gipfel des Pico Christobal Colon / in der Siera Nevada. Er ist 5.775 m Hoch und der Gipfel ist nur 35 KM vom Meer entfernt . Die Five Bays sind tiefe Einschnitte in dieses Gebirge, total grün und sehr geschützt. Alles ist ein National Park und es gibt nur einige Indio Fischer die dort leben. Wir bleiben 2 Tage und genießen den es mit tauchen und faulenzen.

We carry on to 5 bays. 120 SM lies ahead of us. The weather is not really good, strong thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusts of wind. In the next morning we can see the tip of the mountain "Pico Christobal Colon", in the Siera Nevada. With a height of 5.775 m we can see snow on the top. The five bays are deep cuts into the mountain, very green and totally sheltered. It is all a part of a big National Park and only Indian fishermen live there. We stay for two days and enjoy snorkeling and resting.

Unsere Vorräte an frischem Obst und Gemüse sind alle verbraucht und wir brechen heute auf nach Rodadero, zurück in die Zivilisation. Rodadero ist ein kleiner Ferienort für Kolumbianer, eine schöne Bucht, eingerahmt von hohen Felsen mit einer vorgelagerten Insel, einem breitem Sandstrand mit Palmen und dahinter einer schönen Promenade. Hier bekommen wir wieder alles was wir an Proviant für die nächsten 100 SM bis Cartagena benötigen. Wir genießen es, gemeinsam mit Arnold und Coby, gehen ins Internet
Café und erfreuen uns der einheimischen Küche in kleinen einfachen Restaurants. Für Sylvia und Coby gibt es auch noch viele Geschäfte mit schönen Sachen. Die Ortschaft hat einen besonderen Flair, Pferdekutschen, Eselkarren und viele Indio Straßenhändler gehören ebenso zum Ortsbild als auch die Musikanten am Strand und überall viel Polizei. Alle sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit, mancher erhofft sich, dass von uns "Reichen" etwas für ihn abfällt, aber niemand ist zu aufdringlich und wenn wir etwas Geld ausgeben, bekommen dafür auch immer eine Leistung, etwa wie der Müll wird entsorgt oder das Dinghi wird bewacht usw. Z.B. werden alle Boote der Einheimischen am Strand Tag und Nacht bewacht. Der Wächter wird uns vorgestellt. Man verlangt nichts, erwartet aber für die Leistung etwas. Auch die Einheimischen nutzen dieses System und es funktioniert sehr gut. Wir schätzen dieses System und nutzen es gerne.

All our fresh foods are completely used up so we set off for Rodadero - back to Civilization.
Rodadero is a small holiday resort for the Colombian people. We find ourselves in a beautiful bay, enclosed by steep cliffs. There is a lovely, wide sand beach with lots of palm trees and a nice promenade behind.
Here is all we need. Together with Coby and Arnold we visit the Internet shop and enjoy the local food in the small coffee bars and restaurants. Sylvia and Coby also enjoy looking at the many little shops with the beautiful handicrafts from the Indios. The place has a special flair with it`s donkey and horse pulled carriages, lots of Indios stood trying to sell their handicrafts and the musicians on the beach. Lots of Police also belong to the scene. All are very friendly and helpful and most of them hope that they will receive a generous tip :-).

Der Wind ist genau von vorne und für unsere Weiterfahrt nach Cartagena nicht gerade ideal. Wir beschließen noch 2 Tage in Rodadero zu bleiben. Mein Außenborder streikt wieder einmal. Er wird in Cartagena repariert.

Wind is on the nose and not ideal for sailing on to Cartagena. Therefore we decide to stay another two days in Rodadero. Again our outboard engine has gone on strike, so it will be repaired in Cartagena.

Der Wind ist weiter von vorne und das wird laut Wetterbericht auch in absehbarer Zeit so bleiben. Um 2:00 morgens laufen wir aus Richtung Hermanos und sind um 14:00 in der geschützten Bucht. Die Karte stimmt überhaupt nicht und das Riff, welches sich ca. 0,5 SM nach Süden erstreckt ist nicht eingezeichnet. Da sich die See schwer am Riff bricht ist es aber nicht zu übersehen. Das Wasser ist hier überall grün und trübe, die vielen Flüsse schwemmen Schlamm, Schwebstoffe, viele Pflanzen und ganze Bäume ins Meer. Die Navigation in Küstennähe ist daher nicht immer einfach und auch nicht ungefährlich.

The wind is still on the nose and the weather report acknowledges that it intends to stay that way for a while. So at 2.a.m. we set sail for Hermanos and arrive at 14:00h. in a protected bay. The sea maps are not correct & don`t mention the reefs that are half a mile long to the south of the bay. But the waves breaking on the reef let it be easily seen. The water is green and dull because muddy rivers branch into the ocean bringing lots of plants, branches and also logs in our direction. The navigation along the coast is therefore not always easy and sometimes quite dangerous.

Es steht Schwell in die Bucht und es regnet. Wir bekommen die Ausläufer eines tropischen Sturmes zu spüren. Der Regen ist heftig. Unser Dinghi liegt an Deck und binnen Minuten sind 100-150 Liter Regenwasser im Dinghi. Es hat zum Glück einen Stoppel, so dass wir Wasser wieder ablassen können. Wir lichten um 6 Uhr morgens den Anker und brauchen trotz Deckwaschanlage eine gute halbe Stunde um die Kette vom Schlamm zu befreien. Der Wind ist nach wie vor von vorne und wir motoren und motorsegeln Richtung
Cartagena. Am Abend um 18 Uhr erreichen wir den Ankerplatz vor dem Club Nautico in Cartagena. Wir fahren noch in den Club auf einen Sandwich und einen Drink und dann geht's in die Koje.

Swell has mounted up into the bay and it is raining. We are feeling the effects of a tropical storm. The rain is very heavy. Within minutes there is about 100 to 150 liters of water in the dinghy. Luckily we have a plug to pull out :-)!
We lift our anchor at 6:00 a.m. and need over half an hour to clean our anchor chain as it is so muddy.
We still have the wind on the nose so we use the help of the engine to sail to Cartagena.
At 18:00 we arrive and set anchor in front of the Yacht Club. We jump into the dinghy and go for a drink and a sandwich and then fall tired into bed.

Die Altstadt von Cartagena ist ein Traum. Erbaut im 16-17. Jahrhundert von den spanischen Erobererrn zum Sammeln und Verschiffen der Gold Schätze der Inkas und Majas und immer wieder angegriffen von den Piraten, wegen der dort lagernden Schätze, wurde sie im Laufe der Zeit immer stärker befestigt. Alle diese Forts und Mauern sind voll erhalten und umschließen die Altstadt. Mit seinen engen Gassen und den alten Gebäuden, die den damaligen Reichtum erkennen lassen, fühlt man sich um Jahrhunderte zurück versetzt. Es ist alles sehr gepflegt, viele Straßenhändler, Schubkarren und Eisverkäufer (Blockeis geraspelt mit Sirup) aber auch nette Cafe`s und Restaurants laden zum verweilen ein.




The old part of the town is very beautiful. It was built in the early 16th and 17th century by the Spanish collect and ship the gold stolen from the Inkas and Majas.
As it was also permanently attacked by pirates they built stronger and stronger fords and walls. All this can still be seen and surrounds the old part of the city.
It is charming with it`s narrow little streets and old buildings, wooden balcony`s etc.
Everything is very clean with quaint little coffee bars and restaurants. Here you can watch the activities of the "street traders" trying to sell their goods and the ice cream carts rolling by.

Wir gehen einkaufen. Benzin, Lebensmittel, bringen die Wäsche in die Wäscherei (im Club) usw. Im Restaurant im Supermarkt essen wir beide für weniger als 3 Euro inkl. Fruchtsaft Getränke sehr gut zu Mittag. Die Versorgung ist exzellent und Obst und Gemüse sind ein wahrer Traum. Das Taxi in die Altstadt kostet 1,4 Euro. Ein Bier im Yachtclub kostet 0,9 Euro. Alle sind sehr freundlich und wir fühlen und richtig wohl.

It is time to do some work!! We need petrol, food stuffs and the washing has to be taken to the laundry. In the nearby supermarket restaurant we enjoy a good lunch with fresh fruit juice and also the fact that it costs less than ? 3.00 :-)!
The choice of goods is excellent and the quality and variety of the fruit and vegetables makes it a pleasure to shop.
The taxi to the town is only ?1.40 and a beer in the Yacht Club ?-.90. and the people are all very friendly so we feel very happy to be here.

Sylvia hat Ihre Brillen verloren und ich brauche auch neue Brillen, also suchen wir einen Optiker. Nach zwei Taxi Fahrten und 3 Optiker Besuchen finden wir endlich im Comercial Center in Boca Grande einen Optiker der uns zusagt. Wir ordern beide Gleitsichtbrillen mit automatischer Verdunkelung bei Sonne mit modernster Gläsern und schönen italienischen Rahmen. Dann geht's zu zurück in den Yachtclub. Um 19:00 startet die Halloween Party, natürlich sind wir dabei. Es ist wie "Carneval", sehr bunt und nur Latein Amerikanische Musik. Für 7 Euro sind alle Getränke und das Essen inkludiert. Wir mischen uns unter den Trubel und genießen den südamerikanischen Flair.

Sylvia has lost her glasses and I also need new ones. We search for a good optician (that also speaks english)! After two taxi rides and visits to three different opticians we finally find a good one in the Commercial Center. We both order multi focal and automatically darkening glasses with nice frames. We feel we have become good and competent service.
After we arrive back, we freshen up and change our clothes to attend the Halloween party at the Yacht Club. It is a pleasure to watch the colourful and lively Carnival like activities with Latin American music. We join in on the dancing and enjoy a lovely evening.
