5.September-3.Oktober Blog 4

5. September. – 3. Oktober Blog 4

Crotone 5th Sept. We set sail 6.00a.m. with destination “Rochella” approx. 65sm. We arrived in the Marina (in the middle of nowhere) at 19.30 just in time to go in the restaurant there for dinner. In the early morning we carry on to Messina. We originally wanted to go to Regio di Callabria but the Marina was full so we had to carry on to Messina. The marina was not at all nice, facilities were not clean but it was extremely expensive at €80. - more than double the price of everywhere else.

Next morning we sail to the Lipari Islands. We arrive in the night. Lipara is a lovely little island but quite touristic. I leave Heinz on the boat to enjoy doing some window shopping.
Next day we carry on to the island Vulcano in anchored in the west bay, the safest place to anchor in all of the Lipari islands. Therefore we stay for three days and climb up the vulcano to the crater. We also visit the natural hot fango pools. It is all really impressive and I am quite proud of my mountain climb.

From Vulcano we visit Panarea the island where the rich and famous Italian reside. Accordingly the island is very beautiful, spotlessly clean and very expensive with beautiful houses and villas. We take lots of photos and next morning leave for Salina. There we enjoy the comforts of a Marina again so we stay for 2 days. We walk around the island and also find an Internet Café to catch up on all the news.

We carry on to Filicudi where we anchor for the next 2 days waiting for the weather to change for the better. We are relieved when we can leave for west Sardinia. The wind is on the nose as always (!!) and we tie up in Porticello one of the largest fishing harbours in Sicily.
The engine problem that it takes ages to ignite is becoming more frequent. So we find a mechanic who comes and bleeds the fuel system, proclaims that all is well now, but everything is just as it was as we try to start the engine next day L..

Unglaublich!!!

We sail to Castellammare, south west of Sicily. We anchor and go with the dinghy to do some shopping etc. As we arrive, I ask a gentleman stood there if he could tell us where a laundry is. He said “Fetch your washing, I will take you”. He not only took us to the laundry but to an internet point. After approx.an hour he just happened to be driving past there again (!!) and then took us for a small sightseeing tour. To top it all, he came next day with a farewell present. A bottle of liquor made from the local herbs. We are so touched by so much friendliness.
The engine problem has got to a stage where we have to find a good mechanic to help us. We are very lucky to find “Giaspo” who works many hours on the repair, but alas in vain. He finally diagnosis the fault to be the fuel pump and drives us to Palermo (60kms) in his own car. Jackpot, that was the solution. Here again “Giaspo” didn`t even want to take the adequate fee we offered for his costs and troubles. We obviously insisted but here again were so impressed how nice the people are.

After the repair we sail to „Capo San Vito“ only 12sm, but we want to test the engine. All is ok and it works again perfectly. The town of San Vito has a “Couscous” festival going on and we enjoy the colourful decorations, activities and a good meal.

22nd of September we leave „Capo San Vito” to sail to the SE cap of Sardinia – Stella Maris. 32 hours later we dropped anchor in a bay next to a Marina and hoped to enjoy a nice meal in “their” restaurant which they didn’t have!!
Next day we carry on to “Teulada” but the wind is blowing at 30 knots on the nose!! We are relieved to arrive at the Marina there. Owing to the fact that the weather is getting worse and worse and there is no infra structure or town in the vicinity of the marina, we decide to carry on quickly to San Antioco where we hope to have more possibilities to do things while waiting for better weather. Alas, when we arrive (after hard sailing), we find a commercial harbour only, where we have no possibilities to tie up. We have to anchor far out in the bay in the middle of nowhere.
Next morning the anchor keeps slipping so we decide to try our luck in the commercial harbour again and manage to tie up along side a trawler. As we go for a small walk on the docks, a couple in a car stop and ask us if we would like a lift to the town. We gladly accept to do shopping etc. Antonello even drives us back again. Next day Antonello and his wife Patricia meet us at the harbour to take us on a sight seeing tour. Again we are touched by the great kindness and hospitality. After a lovely day we pick up their 13year old son Franco and all enjoy a nice meal together. Next day Antonello is stood at the pier holding 3bottles of wine and a bottle of Grappa as a farewell present. Just unbelievable!! Here I must add that they both couldn`t speak either English or German but took the trouble to explain all the places we visited etc. and even managed to make us understand.

On the 28th September we leave Sardinia for Ibiza. A long sail ahead, but we have managed to be patient enough to wait for better weather. At 5a.m. three days later we sail into Ibiza. A beautiful town with lots to see. In a few days, weather allowing we will be setting sail for the Spanish mainland. Now we are off to the Internet point to put this Blog through. See you soon.
